Hey there! Deciding to transition from relaxed to natural hair is a significant and personal journey. For many, the turning point often comes from a desire to embrace their natural texture, reduce hair damage, or achieve healthier hair overall. Personally, I made the decision after noticing the extensive breakage and thinning caused by chemical relaxers.
One surprising challenge I faced was dealing with the two different textures—my natural roots and the relaxed ends. This made detangling a bit of a nightmare at first! To overcome this, I relied heavily on protective styles like braids and twist-outs, which helped blend the textures and reduce manipulation. Deep conditioning treatments also became a staple in my routine to keep my hair moisturized and manageable.
Some of my favorite products during the transition included leave-in conditioners like Kinky-Curly Knot Today, which made detangling much easier, and SheaMoisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Treatment Masque for deep conditioning. Additionally, I found that regular trims to gradually cut off the relaxed ends helped maintain the health of my hair and made the transition smoother.
One memorable moment from my journey was the first time I wore my natural curls out in public. It was such an empowering experience, and I felt a renewed sense of confidence and self-acceptance. Remember, patience and consistency are key, and it’s all about finding what works best for your unique hair. Best of luck on your natural hair journey!
