Hey fellow adventurers!
I’m Mila, and if there’s one thing I love as much as exploring the great outdoors, it’s taking care of my natural hair. Whether I’m hiking up a mountain or kayaking down a river, I’ve learned a few tricks to keep my hair healthy and fabulous. Here are some essential tips for beginners that I’ve picked up along my adventures.
1. Embrace the LOC Method
The Liquid-Oil-Cream (LOC) method has been a game-changer for me. After a long day of exploring, my hair can get pretty dry, especially if I’m out in the sun. I start with a water-based leave-in conditioner (the liquid), follow up with an oil like argan or jojoba (the oil), and finish with a creamy moisturizer (the cream). This method helps lock in moisture and keeps my curls defined and soft.
2. Protective Styles Are Your Best Friend
When I’m on a multi-day trek or camping trip, protective styles like braids or twists are a lifesaver. They minimize manipulation and reduce the risk of tangling and breakage. Plus, they look super cute under a hat or bandana!
3. Hydration, Hydration, Hydration
Staying hydrated is not just about drinking water (though that’s super important too!). I always carry a small spray bottle filled with water and a few drops of essential oil to spritz my hair throughout the day. It keeps my scalp hydrated and my hair feeling fresh.
4. Silk Scarves and Bonnets
Sleeping in a tent doesn’t mean you have to compromise on hair care. I always pack a silk scarf or bonnet to protect my hair while I sleep. It’s lightweight and makes a huge difference in preventing frizz and breakage.
5. Natural Hair-Friendly Sunscreen
Yes, your hair needs sun protection too! I use a natural hair sunscreen spray to protect my scalp and hair from UV rays. It’s especially handy on those long beach days or high-altitude hikes.
6. Deep Conditioning Treatments
After a week of adventure, my hair deserves some pampering. I treat myself to a deep conditioning session with a DIY mask made from avocado, honey, and olive oil. It’s a great way to replenish moisture and nutrients.
7. Listen to Your Hair
Every head of hair is different, and what works for me might not work for you. Pay attention to how your hair responds to different products and routines. It’s all about trial and error and finding what makes your hair happy.
I’m curious, what are your go-to hair care tips while you’re out exploring? Have you tried any of the methods I mentioned? Let’s share our experiences and learn from each other!
Happy adventuring and hair caring!
